The short answer

Drain flies do not live in your kitchen. They live in the soft film of bacteria and organic sludge coating the inside of your pipes, and that film is both where they lay their eggs and what their larvae eat.

Killing the adults you can see does nothing, because the nursery is still down there. Bleach and boiling water do not work either, because they rinse past the film instead of removing it.

What ends it: digest the film. An enzyme and bacteria based cleaner left in the drain overnight eats the layer away. No film means no food, which means the larvae never mature. Treat a few nights running, then expect three to four weeks for the flies already alive to age out. After that, a monthly dose keeps it from ever coming back.

The flies are not the problem. What is coating the inside of this pipe is the problem.

1. Are they actually drain flies?

Three different insects get called the same thing, and they need three different fixes. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason people spend a month treating something that was never the source.

Drain flies, also called moth flies or filter flies, are fuzzy. Dark gray or tan, about an eighth of an inch, with wings held flat over the body like a tiny moth. They are terrible fliers. They sit still on the wall near a sink for long stretches, then hop a short distance when you get close. If it looks like a speck of lint that moves, that is a drain fly.

Fruit flies are smooth and tan with red eyes, and they fly properly. They hover over the fruit bowl, the recycling, the wine glass you left out. They breed in fermenting food, not in pipe film. Cleaning your drains will not touch them.

Fungus gnats are skinny, dark and long legged, and they come off your houseplants when you water them. They breed in wet potting soil. The fix there is letting the soil dry out between waterings.

2. Find the drain they are actually using

Most homes have more drains than anyone remembers. Kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, tub, shower, toilet overflow, a floor drain in the basement or laundry room, a utility sink in the garage, the condensate line off the air conditioner, a guest bathroom nobody has run in months. Any one of them can be the source, and treating the wrong one gets you nowhere.

The test is free and takes one night.

The tape test. Cut a strip of clear packing tape and stretch it sticky side down across each suspect drain, leaving a small gap at one edge so air still moves. Do it before bed, after the drain has been dry for a few hours. Check in the morning. Adults emerging overnight get stuck to the underside. The drain with flies on the tape is your source. Drains with clean tape are not, and you can stop thinking about them.

Run it two nights in a row before you rule a drain out. A light infestation does not produce a fly every single night.

3. What the film actually is, and why the flies need it

Everything on this page depends on understanding one thing, so it is worth ninety seconds.

Every drain in your house carries organic material down it every day. Grease and food protein in the kitchen. Skin cells, hair, soap scum and toothpaste in the bathroom. Almost none of it makes it all the way out. A thin layer clings to the pipe wall, and bacteria colonize that layer and build a matrix around themselves. The result is a soft, slick, gelatinous coating on the inside of the pipe, thickest in the few inches below the drain opening and around the trap.

This is what plumbers call biofilm, and it is the entire drain fly habitat.

The adults lay eggs directly into it. Egg masses are commonly fifteen to forty at a time, tucked into the film just above the waterline where it stays damp but is not submerged.

The larvae live in it and eat it. This is the part people miss. Drain fly larvae are not swimming in the standing water in your trap. They are embedded in the film, grazing on the bacteria, algae and decaying organic matter in it. The film is simultaneously their nursery, their shelter and their entire food supply.

Which gives you the leverage. You do not have to find the larvae, reach the larvae, or poison the larvae. You have to take away the film they are eating. Remove the food source and the generation currently developing in there does not reach adulthood, and the adults that survive have nowhere viable to lay.

4. Why the home remedies keep failing

Every one of these is all over the internet, and every one of them shares the same flaw. They treat the water. The eggs and larvae are not in the water, they are in the film on the wall.

Boiling water. Pours straight through. It contacts the pipe wall for roughly a second on the way down, which is nowhere near enough to lift a layer that is gripping the surface, and it cools fast once it hits the trap. In PVC and on older glued joints, repeated boiling water is a genuinely bad idea.

Bleach. Same problem, worse tradeoffs. Bleach is a disinfectant, not a degreaser. It sluices past the film without removing it, and the bacteria it does kill stay stuck to the wall as a food layer for whatever colonizes next. It is also rough on a septic system, where you need the bacteria alive and working.

Vinegar and baking soda. The foam is satisfying and it is over in about thirty seconds. The two ingredients neutralize each other. There is no residual activity and nothing in it digests the organic layer.

The vinegar bowl trap. This one works exactly as advertised and still solves nothing. It catches adults. Adults are the final two weeks of the life cycle and the only stage you can see. The eggs and larvae in the pipe keep maturing on schedule the entire time.

Chemical drain openers. Built to punch a channel through a clog so water moves again. Punching a channel through the film is not the same as removing the film, and the coating above the water line never gets touched. 5. How enzyme cleaners digest the film and stop the larvae

This is the part that actually matters, so here is the mechanism in full.

Enzymes break organic matter into pieces small enough to wash away

An enzyme is a biological catalyst. Each type has one job, and it does that job by cutting a specific kind of large molecule into smaller, water soluble fragments.

  • Protease breaks down proteins. In a drain that means food residue, skin cells, hair and the protein content of the bacterial matrix itself.
  • Lipase breaks down fats, oils and grease. In a kitchen line this is the biggest single component of the film.
  • Amylase breaks down starches and other carbohydrates, which is most of what goes down a kitchen sink after a meal.

The distinction that makes this work: a detergent loosens soil so water can carry it off, which requires flow and scrubbing. An enzyme dismantles it chemically, in place, whether or not anything is moving. That is why enzymes reach the film on a vertical pipe wall six inches down where no brush, no flush and no pressure ever gets.

Why live bacteria beat a one time dose of enzymes

Pour a fixed quantity of enzymes into a drain and they go to work, get consumed, and that is the end of it. There is a better version.

How that ends the infestation, stage by stage

Walk it through and the whole thing is straightforward:

  • Larvae starve out. They feed on the organic film. As it is digested away there is progressively less to eat, and larvae that do not accumulate enough to pupate never become adults.
  • Eggs lose their site. Females lay into damp organic material, not onto bare pipe. A cleaned wall is not a viable place to lay.
  • The odor goes with it. The smell from a drain is the bacterial colony in that film. Remove the film and the smell is not masked, it is gone. Same job, covered in how to clean a smelly drain.
  • The adults you can see are unaffected, and that is fine. They have about two weeks left and no replacements coming. You wait them out.

Nothing here is an insecticide. There is no pesticide going into your kitchen sink and nothing to keep away from pets. You are removing a habitat, not poisoning an animal.

And it does not wreck your plumbing

Because it is a biological process rather than a chemical reaction, the formula is non corrosive. It is fine in cast iron, copper, PVC and ABS, which is exactly the opposite of the acid and lye based openers that are a real risk in aging plumbing. Drains running to a septic tank actively benefit, since you are adding the same category of bacteria the tank depends on rather than bleaching them back. 7. How to do it, step by step

Rinse right after treating and you have washed the treatment away. The drain has to be left alone.
  1. Clear the obvious debris first. Pull the stopper or strainer and get the hair and gunk out by hand. Enzymes work on organic film, not on a hairball.
  2. Scrub what you can reach. A stiff bottle brush worked around the pipe wall breaks the surface of the film so the treatment gets underneath it. Six inches of reach is plenty. Do not run a metal snake down a drain that is not clogged.
  3. Treat at night, after the last use of the day. This is the step people skip, and then wonder why it did not work.

  5. Leave it alone for at least six to eight hours. Overnight is ideal. No water, no rinse. Contact time is the active ingredient.
  6. Repeat on consecutive nights. Established film does not come off in one pass.
  7. Treat every drain that failed the tape test, plus its neighbors. Drains connect. A clean sink feeding a shared branch line with a filthy one gets recolonized.

8. How long until they are gone

This is the part almost nobody tells you, and it is why people quit two days in and go buy a spray.

Drain flies pass through egg, larva, pupa and adult. Eggs hatch in about two days. The larval stage runs roughly eight to twenty four days depending on temperature and how much food is down there. Pupae take another twenty to forty hours. Adults live about two weeks. Start to finish, the cycle typically closes in about three to four weeks, and it runs faster in a warm house.

So in practice:

  • Days 1 to 3. You treat. You still see adults. Nothing is wrong. Those flies emerged from eggs laid before you started and they will live out their two weeks regardless of what you do.
  • Weeks 1 to 2. Numbers drop noticeably as the larvae in the film run out of food.
  • Weeks 3 to 4. The last adults from the original generation die off with nothing behind them. This is when it looks solved, because it is.

Run the tape test again at the end of week two. Clean tape with a few adults still on the wall means you have won and you are waiting out stragglers. Flies on the tape means there is still an active breeding site, and it is almost always a drain you have not treated yet.

9. Keeping them from coming back

Film rebuilds. That is simply what drains do. The maintenance is small.

How often What to do

10. When it is not the drain

If you have treated every drain, run the tape test twice, and still have flies, the breeding site is somewhere else that stays permanently damp with organic matter in it:

  • A cracked or broken sewer line under a slab, which is the serious one
  • A sump pit
  • A toilet with a failing wax ring, where waste is wicking into the subfloor
  • Standing water in a crawlspace
  • A rarely used shower pan with a leaking liner
  • Outdoors, a clogged gutter or standing water right by a door

Sudden heavy numbers in a basement with no drain testing positive is worth a plumber's camera. That is not a cleaning problem.

11. Common questions

Are drain flies dangerous? They do not bite and they are not considered disease carriers in a home. They move between waste material and living space, so they are a sanitation nuisance rather than a health threat. Very heavy indoor populations have been linked to aggravating asthma in some people.

Do enzyme cleaners actually kill the larvae? Not directly, and that is the point. They remove the organic film the larvae feed on and develop in. Without that food source the larvae do not reach maturity, and females have nowhere viable to lay. It ends the population rather than knocking down one generation of adults.

Will an exterminator solve it? A good one will tell you what this page tells you, then treat the drains. Contact insecticide kills adults in the room and does nothing to larvae in the film, so a perimeter spray with no drain work will not hold.

Can I use more product to go faster? No. The limit is contact time and how much film remains, not dose. A double pour rinsed away in an hour accomplishes less than a normal pour left overnight.

Is it safe for old pipes? Yes. No acid, no lye, no heat. That is exactly what separates it from the chemical openers that are a genuine risk in aging plumbing.

Is it safe around pets and kids? There is no insecticide involved at any point. You are removing a habitat, not applying a poison. Follow the label like any household product.
