How to Clean Carpet Stains

Carpet stains can be frustratingly difficult to remove. Due to a number of different stain substances and carpet materials, there are different remedies that are recommended to remove carpet stains. The most important first step is to always gently blot the stain with a dry, white towel. Never rub the stain as this can lead to saturation within the carpet fibers and make it more difficult to ever remove the stain entirely.

For most stains, a simple mixture of vinegar, dish soap and water is usually suggested. Combine 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle and fill with water. Spray the stain liberally and allow the mixture to soak for 5-10 minutes. Then blot with a clean, dry cloth. For ink and other difficult stains, you can use a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. And certain types of carpet can sustain a cleaning mixture of 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup of bleach. Of course, with any solution, test an area of the carpet to make sure the fibers will not be damaged or discolored.

If the simple measures above prove ineffective, Earthworm® Carpet & Rug Spot, Stain & Odor Remover is a superior product for removing spots, stains and odors with naturally-occurring enzymes that break down organic materials. Before using the product, vacuum the area thoroughly. Then spray the area until damp and allow to stand for 3-5 minutes. Blot the spot or stain with a clean rag, and repeat the application if necessary.
